Kris Flott
Founder, Parent Representative
Kris is one of the founding members of Nebraska Hands & Voices and Guide By Your
Side. She served as the first President of H&V, has been Vice-President on an off for several years, and currently serves as interim Vice-President. Kris is also a parent member of the Nebraska Association of the Deaf (NeAD) and serves on the NeAD’s Advisory Committee for their upcoming Deaf Mentor project. She previously worked with the EHDI Family Support Work Group as well.
In her professional life, Kris has worked full time for Lamson Dugan & Murray LLP as a Legal Administrative Assistant for the past 24 years and has also been active in the Omaha & Nebraska Legal Professional Associations.
Kris and her husband Marty have been married for nearly 35 years. Together they have four children: Thomas – 30, Amanda – 25, Louie the Labrador, and Baxter the “Bully.” Thomas is profoundly deaf and legally blind. He has a cochlear implant and a hearing aid and uses Total Communication, relying mostly on sign language. Thomas graduated from Ralston High School and took classes at Metro Community College for a few years. He has worked with the Nebraska Commission for Blind and Visually Impaired Vocational Rehabilitation (NCBVI). Through NCBVI, Thomas had the amazing opportunity to attend the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults. Thomas currently works full time at Physicians Mutual Insurance Company as a mail specialist. Kris became involved with Hands & Voices because she wanted to share my experiences.
Over the years, she has received great support and lots of advice from “veteran parents” and felt that now she is one of those “veterans”, so it was her time to give back. She also felt that even though she had a lot of support from professionals and parents, there were still things that she missed – information and organizations that she wishes she had known about earlier on in their journey. She truly believes that parents are our best resource, and Hands & Voices and Guide By Your Side brings all those resources together.
