Sara Peterson
State Coordinator for Programs for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Sara Peterson lives on a farm near Gering with her husband Davin, their 3 kids Kaitlyn, Natalie, Trista, 3 pups and a tortoise. Sara serves on the board representing Nebraska Regional Programs, NDE, and western Nebraska since she is the State Coordinator for Programs for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Her goal is to bring educational, social, and networking connections to greater the Nebraska area. In her 22 years of experience as a Deaf Education, Sara has learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t work for children who are d/hoh, and she encourages parents to see their child’s school as a “partner” and find that one person within the school to connect with, to check in with, and to go to when things might not be going well. One of the most rewarding parts of Sara’s role is seeing former students bring their children to the regional programs and hearing them as adults “remember when” about the things they did together over a decade ago. The reminds her how small interactions make a big impact. As much as her students have learned from her, she feels that she has learned so much more from them and their families, and she looks forward to learning from their children!
